Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (Deemed to be University) [SRMC & RI (DU)], ranked among the top health sciences universities in India, had its origin as Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute which was established by Sri Ramachandra Educational and Health Trust in the year 1985 as a private not-forprofit self-financing institution and dedicated to serve the society as a centre of excellence with emphasis on medical education, research and health care. The Trust achieved the task of establishing the Institution as a “Centre of Excellence” under the leadership of Late Shri. N.P.V.Ramasamy Udayar who was the Founder & Managing Trustee of the Trust and also the first Chancellor of the Deemed to be University. Shri. V.R. Venkataachalam is currently the Chancellor of the Deemed to be University and is also the Managing Trustee of the Trust.

In view of its academic excellence, the Government of India declared Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute as a Deemed to be University in September, 1994 under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. As required by the UGC, a separate and dedicated Trust, “Sri Ramachandra University Trust” was created in 2012 to run the Deemed to be University, fully complying with the UGC norms.

 Over three decades, the institute has transformed into a full-fledged Deemed to be University with nine Constituent Colleges / Faculties offering 104 U.G. and P.G. courses in health care sciences, 6501 students receiving teaching-learning training under them, during the academic year 2017-18.

 Spread over 150 acres in Porur, Chennai, the University has several amenities and best of the infrastructure within the campus to provide its students the paramount educational environment in the country.

The consistent quest for excellence in medical education, health care and research has earned the Deemed University many notable accreditations, recognitions and awards. Notable among them are –

  • The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has reaccredited (cycle-2) Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (Deemed to be University) with “A” Grade with a CGPA of 3.62 on a 4-point scale, the highest to be awarded to a private medical University in India.
  • National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH).
  • The Medical Council of India (MCI) has recognized and upgraded the Regional Centre in Medical Education Technologies, of the SRMC & RI (DU) as a Nodal Centre to conduct both Basic and Advance course in Medical Education Technologies.
  • The WHO has designated SRMC & RI (DU) as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Occupational Health.
  • The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has accredited the Biodosimetry lab of the Department of Human Genetics for assessment of personnel radiation exposure and related studies, the only non-governmental institution to have achieved such accreditation.
  • The Faculty of Public Health has the distinction of being recognized by the ICMR as a “SRU-ICMR Centre for Advanced Research on Air Quality, Climate and Health”.

The Deemed University provides a conducive and vibrant atmosphere to around 6501 students enrolled in a range of medical, dental, nursing and allied health sciences programs at the undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral levels. Dedicated research and sophisticated instrumentation facilities, extensive central library resources and a large 2287- bedded multi-specialty hospital support all academic programs. The lush campus spread over an area of 150 acres provides various student facilities including hostel accommodations. Hostel facility for students is available within the campus during the course duration.

Associate Fellow of Industrial Health (AFIH) Course

The Associate Fellow of Industrial Health (AFIH) course is offered by The Directorate General, Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes (DGFASLI), Ministry of Labour, Govt. of India. This course will be conducted by The Department of Environmental Health Engineering of SRMC & RI (DU), Which is a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Research and Training in Occupational and Environmental Health, and also a ICMR- Center for Advanced Research in Environmental Health for the Indian Council of Medical Research, Govt. Of India.

This 3-month full time program will provide intensive training for medical professionals to acquire skills for occupational health practice. The course contents and curricula have been framed as per guidelines issued by the Academic Council of AFIH, Industrial Medicine Division, Central Labour Institute, DGFASLI, Mumbai. This includes Various aspects of Occupational Health and Industrial Medicine Practice, Practical, Clinical training, Educational visits, Group discussions, Project work etc. The training will prepare candidates for the qualifying examination to be conducted by the Examination Board of DGFASLI at the end of the 3 month period and successful candidates will be awarded a post graduate certificate entitled “ASSOCIATE FELLOW OF INDUSTRIAL HEALTH” which will fulfill the requirements in terms of additional qualification of Factory Medical Officers of Hazardous Process Industries as required under the Factories (Amendment) Act, 1987. The program will commence on April 02, 2018.

The program is conducted by the Department of Environmental Health Engineering, of this Deemed University with faculty who are well recognized for research and training at the national and international levels in the field of occupational and environmental health. The Department is equipped with state-of-the-art occupational health, industrial hygiene and safety laboratory as well as an extensive library. Multi?disciplinary research projects, industry linkages and national/international partnerships and other ongoing academic activities in the Department of Environmental Health Engineering will provide additional exposure on national /global occupational and environmental issues to the students.

Eligibility for Admission:

1. MBBS Degree from an Institution recognized by the Medical Council of India.

2. Completion of Internship.

3. Permanent Registration with the Medical Council of India/State Medical Council.

4. Minimum 1 year experience in industry or relevant field of occupational health or 2 years’ experience otherwise, after completion of compulsory internship.

Method of Selection: All eligible candidates will be called for Interview. The decision of the Selection Committee shall be final. The candidates should produce all the certificates and documents in original at the time of interview. No TA/DA will be paid for attending the interview.

Any candidate sponsored by the Industry/Organization shall be given preference and such candidate should produce Sponsorship Certificate along with the application. The candidates who are employed in an organization and not sponsored by the Organization shall produce a No Objection Certificate from the employer along with the application. Applicants working in Govt. / Public sector undertakings / Autonomous Bodies etc. should apply through proper channel. Incomplete applications will be rejected summarily.
